TUG-PT<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

LaTeX \u00e9 um sistema de prepara\u00e7\u00e3o de documentos amplamente utilizado pela comunidade cient\u00edfica. Desenvolvido por Leslie Lamport como um conjunto de macros baseadas no TeX de Donald Knuth, o LaTeX \u00e9 uma linguagem estilo \u201cmarkup,\u201d que permite um controlo preciso sobre a estrutura e a formata\u00e7\u00e3o dos documentos, especialmente no que diz respeito a elementos complexos como equa\u00e7\u00f5es matem\u00e1ticas, tabelas e bibliografias. A sua depend\u00eancia de c\u00f3digo-fonte em formato texto em vez de interfaces gr\u00e1ficas garante a reprodutibilidade e a consist\u00eancia a longo prazo, tornando-o particularmente adequado para contextos acad\u00e9micos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A comunidade cient\u00edfica adotou o LaTeX devido ao seu tratamento superior da nota\u00e7\u00e3o matem\u00e1tica, \u00e0 gest\u00e3o de cita\u00e7\u00f5es, ao suporte para documentos estruturados e \u00e0 produ\u00e7\u00e3o de ficheiros PDF com formata\u00e7\u00e3o profissional. Atrav\u00e9s da f\u00e1cil utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o de \u201ctemplates\u201d, o LaTeX responde aos crit\u00e9rios de formata\u00e7\u00e3o exigidos por muitas universidades em todo o mundo, incluindo diversas institui\u00e7\u00f5es portuguesas, para teses de mestrado e de doutoramento.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A partilha de conhecimento e de boas pr\u00e1ticas no uso do LaTeX, incluindo a resolu\u00e7\u00e3o de problemas t\u00e9cnicos e o desenvolvimento de pacotes espec\u00edficos para diferentes \u00e1reas cient\u00edficas, permite suavizar a curva de aprendizagem para iniciantes, reduzir barreiras \u00e0 sua ado\u00e7\u00e3o e melhorar a efici\u00eancia e a qualidade da escrita acad\u00e9mica, em particular para documentos de complexidade elevada, como s\u00e3o as teses de mestrado e de doutoramento.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Convidamos a comunidade cient\u00edfica portuguesa a participar no encontro do TUG-PT (TeX Users Group Portugal), que ter\u00e1 lugar no \u00e2mbito do INForum 2025. Este evento constitui uma oportunidade valiosa para discutir avan\u00e7os no uso do LaTeX, partilhar experi\u00eancias pr\u00e1ticas e explorar solu\u00e7\u00f5es adaptadas para os desafios comuns na prepara\u00e7\u00e3o de documentos cient\u00edficos. Abstract<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

LaTeX2e recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. For the first two decades, the kernel remained largely stable, with minimal bug fixes, but in 2015 development changed significantly: from adding features primarily through standalone packages to directly updating the core system. This shift led to the integration of the original LaTeX3 programming code (known as expl3) in 2020 and, more recently, the adoption of LuaTeX as the recommended engine. We will highlight some of the latest developments, especially the progress of the LaTeX Tagged PDF project, which aims to automatically create PDF\/UA-compliant documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short Bio<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Javier Bezos is passionate about typography, science, language, and writing systems, as well as about computer programming. As a computer programmer, he has developed tools for technical documentation, automatic typesetting and copyediting, XML, and localization. It is this last facet that he develops most actively as a member of the LaTeX Project Team. He has participated as an author on several style manuals, has published the book \u201cTipograf\u00eda y notaciones cient\u00edficas\u201d and has contributed to \u201cThe LaTeX Companion\u201d, 3rd edition. He is na honorary member of the Uni\u00f3n de Correctores, the Spanish professional association of copyeditors, and the Real Sociedad Matem\u00e1tica Espa\u00f1ola, and currently works at Fund\u00e9uRAE, a foundation linked to the Real Academia Espa\u00f1ola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fast-paced IT companies, technical documentation must keep up with ever-evolving products, tight deadlines, and distributed teams. This talk explores how technical communication teams leverage docs-as-code toolchains to produce high-quality, up-to-date, and maintainable documentation.
We\u2019ll cover the benefits and trade-offs of open source tooling, strategies for streamlining writing and publishing workflows, and the role of automation in enforcing consistency and quality.
Finally, we\u2019ll contrast the goals and practices of technical communication in industry with those of academic and scientific writing that use LaTeX-based workflows, highlighting both common ground and key differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This presentation exemplifies the process of designing and supporting a standardised LaTeX template for Master’s dissertations and project reports at a polytechnic institute in Portugal. We talk about the structural and stylistic choices we made to make sure everything was consistent and followed institutional rules. We also highlight important lessons we learnt from working directly with students. We want to show that direct user feedback is important for the template to be improved and kept up to date by sharing these findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
